CHAPTER 11

***LOGAN***

“She’s asleep.”

Maddy clicked her tongue. “Poor child. She truly thought we meant to kill her when that pill took effect.”

“She hasn’t had it easy, Mother,” I said, sitting down. “Shana’s been living off her survival instincts since she was a whelp. Trust isn’t in her vocabulary.”

Maddy dug into her medical kit. “Sit closer, Logan. I need to fix that cut on your cheek.”

“Then you’ll have to tell us of your adventures,” Jordan commented. “I can’t wait.”

As Maddy cleaned my wound, I, between winces, told them everything. From finding Shana in the snare to the last fight with the yo-yos and arriving here. “She has amazing courage, and certainly kept me alive.”

“She’s quite remarkable,” Jordan said. “And it’s quite obvious you have feelings for her.”

I jerked from Maddy’s hands, earning a sharp glare for myself. “You don’t approve.”

“I never said that. While I can’t openly condone it, I won’t forbid it either.”

Maddy grabbed my face and yanked it toward her. “Keep still. I think she’s perfectly lovely, and a fit mate for you.”

“Yeah?”

“Get back here and stay still. I think her feelings match yours, but as you say, she doesn’t trust. You’ll have to earn it.”

“I think I’m making progress in that regard.”

“You are,” she replied, dabbing a stinging liquid on my cut. “But the slightest mistake will have her bolting. Be careful.”

“I will.”

She leaned back to examine her handiwork. “You’ll have a scar, but it shouldn’t be a detriment.”

I blinked. “A detriment to what?”

“Your extraordinary good looks,” she answered primly. “Which you got from my side of the family.”

“Hello?” Jordan complained. “Didn’t I add to his gene pool?”

Maddy sniffed. “Hardly. Logan, be a dear and fetch us all wine.”

Chuckling, I rose to walk to the kitchen. Being a wine lover, my mother made certain every shipment that came into the village contained bottles of her favorite wines. As many others in the clan also enjoyed alcohol, including the elders, crates of wine, beer, and spirits were shipped in on a regular basis.

I returned with three glasses filled to the brim. “Thanks for helping Shana.”

Maddy accepted her glass. “She’s beautiful, Logan. And despite her suspicion, she’s a very good soul.”

“I have to agree,” Jordan admitted, sipping his wine. “Tough, fearless, gorgeous. She should’ve been born a bear.”

I laughed. “Born into the wrong clan, of course. I should’ve seen that at the beginning.”

“You and she may have trouble while you’re here,” my father said, his smile gone. “Most of the clan can be open and accepting. But there are the die-hards who think we should eradicate the wolves permanently.”

“And kill innocent folks,” I growled. “They have as much right to survive as we.”

“You know I agree with you,” he said. “I’m mentioning there are those who don’t. And suggest you be careful.”

I drank my wine while gazing into the fire. “Just how did this stupid feud begin, anyway?”

My parents exchanged glances. “Well,” Jordan answered slowly. “From what I heard; our clans have always been enemies.”

“That is not true,” Maddy exclaimed, scowling at him.
